About
Dr. Erin Belfort
I grew up in central Maine and was eager to return to my home state after medical training. I attended Middlebury College and the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. After medical school, I did a four-year residency in general psychiatry at the Harvard Longwood Residency Training Program in the Harvard Medical School system. I worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess, Faulkner Hospital and Massachusetts Mental Health Center. During my residency training, I spent a year as a psychiatrist at MIT Student Health and enjoyed working with young adults as they transitioned to college. I then completed a two-year fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School. I am trained in psychopharmacology and in a variety of psychotherapy modalities including psychodynamic psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Family Therapy.
After ten years of medical training, I returned home and have had various roles since that time. I am the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program Director at Maine Medical Center and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine. For more than a decade, I worked with a multi-disciplinary Gender Clinic team, which provides gender-affirming care to children, adolescents, young adults and their families.
My academic interests include the impacts of social media on youth, gender-affirming care, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and family therapy teaching. I completed a yearlong intensive family therapy training program at Therapy Training Boston in 2013 and have been teaching and practicing family therapy since. I am actively involved in the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) on the Consumer Issues Committee and as co-chair of the Media Committee. I am a distinguished fellow of AACAP, an honor that recognizes child psychiatrists who have made significant contributions to the field. I am also a member of the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP), a prominent psychiatry 'think tank'.

Written for both families and clinicians, What Helps When Children and Families Struggle offers an introduction to attachment theory as it relates to family life. The authors weave a simple and clear discussion of what families can do to support strong connections and what to do when things have fallen off track.

Consistent with a relational focus on mental health the authors strongly advocate the use of family therapy as the entry point to mental health services when a family member is struggling. Through the use of many illustrations and metaphors, the text is a highly practical guide for the ups and downs of family life.
This text offers a broad overview of attachment informed strategies to support positive family dynamics, as well as discussion of family focused interventions related to a range of complicated dynamics and situations.
